Our Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) services provide a unique and engaging way to reach those students or residents who are resistant to traditional interventions. 

Our learning services are similar to EAP sessions, however the focus of the activities and processing is not therapy but the participants completing interactive activities with the horses that work on skills such as problem solving/creative thinking, communication skills and social skills.

EAL is effective with students/residents who are dealing with learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, those who are at-risk of dropping out, or have disruptive behaviors.

Our typical curriculum run 8, 10, 12 weeks

Pencils and Hoof-picks

These groups are designed for children and youth to incorporate academic standards, and engage learners who are struggling to succeed.  We have integrated nationally proven EAL curriculum Cowboy Poetry and Marvelous Minis into this program along with elements of our character development program.  The result is a unique school based program that includes both academic standards and personal growth and development goals!

Skills and lessons developed during this program include:

  • Integrity and honesty

  • Creative thinking skills
  • Leadership and teamwork
  • Sportsmanship
  • Punctuality
  • Courage
  • and imagination

Learning standards are incorporated throughout this group including vocabulary, math skills, writing skills,and listening and speaking skills. Pencils and Hoof-pricks will be conducted by our treatment team made up of a certified equine specialist, mental health professional, and learning specialist. The team will be able to help teach and develop these skills in a safe and supportive environment which the children see as fun/play and not traditional therapy or learning interventions..

Participants will develop important character concepts, and social skills that build healthy behaviors and core values. Skills developed during the 12 week program instill values such as:

  • Integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness
  • Respect
  • Problem solving and creative thinking skills
  • Leadership and healthy relationship skills
  • Imagination
  • Citizenship
  • Fairness

"Blazing the Trail of Character" is a unique program in that it combines hands-on activities with horses and six character development concepts (hoof-prints). Clients are able to practice the six character development concepts, in a manner that brings these words from an idea to concrete behaviors that they can practice and master.

The six character concepts (hoof-prints) are based on the curriculum "Six Pillars of Character":
  • Trustworthiness
  • Respect
  • Responsibility
  • Fairness
  • Caring
  • Citizenship

Blazing the Trail of Character allows our staff to be proactive in turning character development concepts into everyday behaviors. Graduates of the program will have translated vague concepts into tangible skills that can provide healthy social skills for the future and breaking the cycle of abuse and violence in at-risk populations.

Workshops or Farm Days

Unbridled Change offers organizations the opportunity to customize EAL workshops.   Workshops are typically 2 or 3  hours in length and can focus on skills such as communication, self-confidence, learning to respect boundaries, relationship building, working together, trust and respect and many other skills.
