Equine Assisted Psychotherapy Services

The experiential process of EAP is very effective with clients who are "stuck" or resist traditional "talk" therapy.

EAP produces lasting results in a short amount of time due to the process of interacting with the horses. Unbridled Change is often able to address a clients issues in eight to twelve sessions!

Unbridled Change specializes in working with:

  • At-risk youth - areas include ADD/ADHD, RAD, ODD, and other at-risk behaviors
  • Adjudicated youth - anger management, ODD, and lack of impulse control
  • Autism and Aspergers
  • Anxiety and depression issues
  • Foster Care and Family issues
  • Domestic violence or sexual assault issues

What type of issues are typical?

Our services can help at-risk youth deal with the following issues:

  • poor decision making skills
  • lack of taking responsibility for their own actions
  • poor impulse control
  • argumentative behavior
  • anger management issues
  • authority and respect issues

Families and Foster Care families often find our services helpful with:

  • communication problems
  • relationship and bonding issues
  • reactive attachment disorder
  • parenting problems
  • difficulties in establishing positive boundaries and rules
  • aggression verses assertion

Why EAP works so well with youth?

The nature of EAP is out of the office and engages the clients - mentally, physically, and emotionally.  It also does not "feel" like therapy when a client gets to work with the horses.  Scripted answers, or what clients believe the therapist wants to hear also are not effective during EAP sessions.  We do not require the clients to share their thoughts or feelings, but instead gather information from observing how they interact with the horses.  Clients are able to try out new behaviors for reacting to difficult situations with an unbiased partner - the horse!

What happens during a session?

Each session will take place on the ground with a facilitating team made up of a licensed mental health professional, certified equine specialist and one or more horses.  The client will participate in a variety of ground activities with the horses that work on skills such as problem solving, trust, communication, and relationship skills.
