How to Begin to Talk with Your Body - a Four Step Framework

There is a saying in astrology that the problem with reading a natal chart isn’t that there is too little information, it is that there is too much information. The same is true for when we start to learn the art of talking with our Body, Mind, Heart, and Soul through Self-reflection, inquiry, or what some call intuitive “readings”. 

When we pull back the curtain on our “system” and start to lean into asking questions like:

  • What is happening?
  • What energies are present or active right now?
  • What does my Body or Heart want me to know right now?

It might seem like you are hearing silence, or only a few soft whispers here and there. 

However, in reality our system is always talking to us, the problem is many of us are not taught how to slow down and sort the firehose of information that is being shared across the different levels of us. Therefore, what happens for most of us when we ask Self-Reflection questions is that we are overwhelmed and not able to discern or translate the information so we default down to quick protective statements such as, “I don’t know.” and intuitive reads that more blended with our Mental Being and its protector or the young Wounded Parts of ours and not actually connecting with, diologing, and reading our Soul’s guidance. So we end up on a wild goose chase in our system instead of following the “golden thread” of truth and guidance.

What is happening when we default down to these protective responses is that our real Soul’s guidance is getting drowned out in a symphony of messages of shadow fears and wants, survival needs, and personal desires of what we want to be true. Naturally, this feels confusing, we get disappointed when we try to follow those readings and they end up backfiring, and sometimes we even feel defeated. The result is we fall back to deciding that we just hear crickets, are only “making-up” reads, and declare that we can’t “read” our own system.

To help clients gain more trust, discernment, and confidence in what I believe is EVERYONE’s innate ability to “communicate” with their own system, I teach them is how to begin to sort the information that is always present so that they can start to learn how to dialogue with the four main aspects of themselves - Body, Mind, Heart, and Soul. 

My system of starting every conversation with our system is called the Four Aspect Check-In. This Check-In serves as the entry point of connection and starting point for any Self-Work or Healing Work practice. From this basic Check-In you can have more literal space in your system so that you can sense, see, hear, feel, and know how to follow the golden threads of the system through a larger process I call the “you” turn.

The framework is based on the Somatic Process, Parts Work, Shamanic Process Work, and Archetypal Work. 

  • Step One - Scan the Body Being - what somatic messages are present, what is happening in or around your Body Being?
  • Step Two - Open to the Mental Being - notice what different thoughts, beliefs, sayings, or protective fears are present and how they feel toward the topic you are exploring or sensations that you felt in or around your Body Being.
  • Step Three - Open to the Heart Being - what is your Heart Being bringing forward to sense, see, and feel in this moment. *If you know how to work with the Four Guardians of the Heart, our four survival archetypal patterns,this is a beautiful place to invite them to share with you directly. Learning how to work with archetypes is a HUGE game changer, I teach this in depth within our online school Unbridled Soul.
  • Step Four - Open to the Soul Being - what is your Soul inviting you into feel or explore that you might not have been able to connect with prior to engaging and sorting through the sensations, thoughts, and feelings of the other aspects of you. 

Like learning any new language or skill, practice is needed :) 

As you gain more and more comfort with this Check-In it helps your system predict a method in which the different aspects of your “system” can feel held and honored, two key ingredients for cultivating willingness and connection. That’s why this approach works! Your system builds trust with YOU, the you are now and not the small child it might think you are. This framework helps your Mental Being realize that it no longer needs to run on auto-pilot, protecting you based on its first level of survival mechanisms that just run automatically without your conscious choice attached to it. In a short amount of time, your whole Being starts to gain respect for you and your willingness to honor the different roles and wisdom of each Being. All of which step both you and your system into more willingness and connection with a Heart-led desire to help you befriend these aspects of Self.
